« Ayatollah Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader, denied the accusations that Iran helped Palestinian militants to plot the surprise assault on Israel that was launched on Saturday morning, during a speech in Tehran on Tuesday.
“The Zionist regime’s officials and its supporters have lied in recent days and the lying is still in progress. [They are] introducing Iran as the perpetrator of this action behind the scenes. They are wrong,” said Khamenei.
Iran’s Supreme Leader went on to say that “this action was conducted by Palestine’s people. The intelligent design of this plan and brave youth and devoted activists achieved this epic [operation] and hopefully, this would be a huge step forward for the freedom of Palestine.”
Tehran endorsed the attack and urged other Muslim countries to support the Palestinians against Israel.
“We support their fights. We are kissing the arms and forehead of the genius designer of this plan and the Palestinian brave youth,” added Khamenei, saying that “all the Islamic states are obliged to support Palestine.
Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel on Saturday, October 7, firing thousands of rockets as militants broke through into Israeli territory as part of what the group described as ‘Operation Al-Aqsa Flood’.
Israel responded with airstrikes on the Gaza Strip and issued a formal declaration of war on Hamas, warning residents in Gaza to leave their homes. Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant ordered a full lockdown on Gaza, with electricity, fuel, water and food cut off to the area.
Hamas said the operation was due to the long-running Israeli blockade, raids on West Bank cities and other attacks, while Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed ‘mighty vengeance’ on the group.
Figures from the Palestinian Health Ministry confirm that the death toll from retaliatory strikes by the IDF in Gaza has climbed to 770 killed, with 4,000 injured. The Israeli military said that at least 900 Israelis were killed and 2,616 injured over the course of the conflict.
According to the UN, over 120,000 Palestinians have been displaced during the current fighting. »
