« Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu on Tuesday discussed military support for Ukraine and strengthening of bilateral co-operation in the defence sector in the Ukrainian leader’s first official visit to Romania.
Among other topics, food security was also reportedly discussed, with Zelensky stressing the need to increase the transit of Ukrainian grain exports to Romanian territory.
On Tuesday, Volodymyr Zelensky met with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis at Iohannis’ residence at the Cotroceni Palace in Bucharest. They discussed supplies of Ukrainian grain via Romania, training of Ukrainian pilots on F-16s and strengthening of Ukrainian air defence. Zelensky announced that a new ‘grain corridor’ for the export of Ukrainian grain through Moldova to Romania will be launched soon.
The visit marked the Ukrainian president’s first official visit to Bucharest since the start of Russia’s military offensive.
Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February 2022 after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kiev had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements, and urging Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO.Kiev denounced the Russian action as an invasion. Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky imposed martial law throughout the country, announcing a general mobilisation, while the EU and the US imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow. »
